My goal is to support you in making the changes you wish to happen in your life. Most people come to psychotherapy because they are facing a turning point in their lives---sometimes secondary to loss, or a traumatic event, or a recognition that you'd be happier if you could let go of habitual patterns that are causing you distress.
Each person's circumstances are unique. I think crisis points can actually push us to make changes that seemed impossible to make in the past. Usually in a first meeting, we will discuss your main concerns and develop a short term plan to support you in moving towards your hoped for goals.
Given I have been working as a therapist for over 35 years, I have been trained and practiced in many styles of therapy. If for example, you have experienced a recent traumatic event, I would first want to help you stabilize emotionally and physically. We can work on this using cognitive behavioral therapy, solution focused therapy, mindfulness, somatic, relaxation and guided imagery techniques. I am trained in a technique called EMDR, which has been shown to be effective with many problems, especially trauma situations. I also am trained in biofeedback, as well as hypnosis. Hypnosis when used in psychotherapy is basically a focused awareness that can help you calm your emotions as you access your strengths to gain new perspectives on your situation. I am also trained in therapeutic styles that recognize that there are times our thinking brain gets highjacked by our emotions and body sensations. These therapeutic modalities are called sensorimotor psychotherapy. and in somatic experiencing. I hold a certificate as a somatic experiencing practitioner. Bringing mindfulness to both what is arising in the body and the mind can be helpful in these circumstances.
We would discuss the benefits and limitations of different types of therapy and decide what may work best for your particular circumstances.
In general, I work briefly and try to develop a plan with you where you will recognize progress towards your goals within 6 to 8 meetings. Of course, some circumstances take years to develop, so can take a longer period of time to work through.
